Massachusetts has been ranked first in the nation for health care performance in the Commonwealth Fund’s 2025 Scorecard on State Health System Performance. The report highlights the state’s strengths in health care affordability and access, as well as top rankings in childhood vaccination rates, health insurance coverage, and low rates of infant mortality and avoidable premature deaths.

According to Mass.gov, Governor Maura Healey noted Massachusetts’ continued focus on advancing health care and emphasized that the state is committed to protecting coverage for residents. Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll credited the achievement to collaboration among health care providers, community organizations, and other partners.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kate Walsh said the scorecard supports the state’s approach, particularly its use of Medicaid funding through the MassHealth program. She also acknowledged areas for improvement, including reducing hospital readmissions for older adults and addressing health equity gaps.

Earlier this week, Governor Healey was named 2025 Governor of the Year by the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) for her role in supporting the biotechnology sector in Massachusetts.

The state has also received recent recognition for its economy, education, innovation, and overall quality of life.
